What is Startup Weekend?
In general Startup Weekend is a competition that brings together designers, developers, entrepreneurs, and experts from all backgrounds to build a solid business idea in a weekend. Startup Mackay is excited to bring this amazing experience to the youth community in Mackay!
Startup Weekends are open to anyone who wants to pitch their idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams form around the top ideas and then it’s a full weekend of turning that idea into a business! The weekend wraps up with team presentations to local business leaders and potential investors!
WHO: This event is open to 12 to 17-year-olds, for students and non-students. Sorry parents, youth only, but you can join us on Friday afternoon for an hour to see what the youth are in for the weekend, and/or Sunday afternoon for their presentations.

PRICE: The event is $60 for youth participants.
OVERVIEW OF WEEKEND: The purpose of this event is to introduce students to entrepreneurship, how they can think and operate like an entrepreneur, how startup skills apply to creating a business, working for a company and everyday critical thinking. Overall, this is an exercise and experience for students in building confidence and skills to be the next generation of community leaders.
Students will arrive after school from 3:30 to 4:30. Dinner will be served at 5:00pm. The rest of the night will be spent networking, icebreakers, and orientation. Go home for the night 6.30pm.
Students arrive by 8:00am for breakfast and more networking/icebreakers. Idea pitches begin at 9:00am. Teams form around ideas by 11:00am and begin working. Lunch at 12:30pm and dinner at 5:00pm – snacks served throughout the day. Students continue working between meals and go home no later than 6:00pm.
Students arrive by 8:00am for breakfast and begin working. Lunch at 11:30am – snacks served throughout the day. Dinner will be open to all ticket holders (students, parents, community members) and served at 3:30pm. Students begin pitching the businesses to the audience at 4:00pm. Judging and announcing of winners by 5:30pm. Everyone goes home by 6:00pm!
FOOD: The Startup Mackay team organises all meals while the youth are there (Friday dinner and breakfast/lunch/dinner on Saturday and Sunday).
COACHES: The Startup Mackay team brings in coaches with expertise in technology, computer science, business, marketing, and anything else relevant to launching a business. These coaches work with students over the weekend to help them launch their company on Sunday.
PRIZES: Prizes include thousands of dollars worth of software access from Google, Techstars and more!

About Startup Weekend: Startup Weekends are an event designed to provide superior experiential education for technical and non-technical entrepreneurs. Beginning with Friday afternoon introduction, brainstorming, business plan development, and basic prototype creation, Startup Weekends culminate in Sunday afternoon demos and presentations. Participants create working startups during the event and are able to collaborate with like-minded individuals outside of their daily networks. All teams hear talks by industry leaders and receive valuable feedback from local entrepreneurial’s. The weekend is centered around action, innovation, and education. Whether you are looking for feedback on an idea, a co-founder, specific skill sets, or a team to help you execute, Startup Weekends are the perfect environment in which to test your idea and take the first steps towards launching your own startup.

Terms of Participation Agreement: It is our job to provide you with an incredible networking and learning opportunity. Our intention is that you meet some amazing people that you might actually start a company with, build relationships with coaches, and learn from your peers. The event is intended to be a collaborative forum for sharing, learning, building, and having fun. As such, by registering as a participant, you acknowledge that any ideas shared by you or anyone else over the course of the event are contributions to the overall experience and community. If you as a participant are worried about someone stealing your ideas, please reconsider your participation in the event itself or simply refrain from sharing specifics about your idea.
As a member of your startup community, you agree to be inclusive of any and all people and their ideas. You agree to act professionally, treat everyone with respect, and treat the event facilities with proper care. You agree that you are responsible for any accidents or damages that you cause. You also agree to not hold Startup Weekend, your local volunteer team, or any of the event supporters liable for any loss, damage, injury, or any other unforeseeable incident.
